DiscusSFLX: Composting as a Community

compostingflyer.pngFood waste accounts for a huge amount of the garbage that ends up in landfills, more by weight than any other material. Americans now throw out about 40% of the food purchased, about 35 million tons a year, 3 times more than in 1980. With the Ontario County Landfill set to close in just a few years, this is one issue we need to tackle to reduce waste, reduce costs, and maybe do something productive with a large element of our waste stream.

On Thursday, March 24, 7:00pm at the Victor Farmington Library, we'll hold a DiscusSFLX session on "Composting as a Community", taking a look at the food waste problem and one way we can address the food waste problem -- by composting it and returning it to the earth as a rich soil amendment. Our guest presenters are Steve Kraft from Community Composting and Ryan Heberle from Vermi-Green. We'll discuss ideas on how we can reduce and compost food waste at home, and what we might be able to do in our schools, restaurants, and community.

Come with your questions, experiences, and ideas on composting and food waste! And if you have time, you might want to watch this video for background on the food waste problem.
